Recovery Month: Benefits of Sharing Your Story

Recovery MonthSeptember is Recovery Month and, as part of the celebration, people in recovery from across the country are celebrating their successes and sharing their personal stories in an effort to spread awareness, increase education and inspire others.

There are plenty of ways to share your personal recovery tale. You can submit your story via Recovery Month’s “Voices for Recovery” on Recovery.org or you can share during a group meeting, with a trusted peer, friend or family member or via social media. Whichever way you choose, the benefits are vast and include helping to stop the stigma against addiction.

Here are more reasons why sharing your story is a win-win during Recovery Month and beyond:

  1. It will remind you why the hard work of recovery is so worth it. Talking about your active addiction will bring back how terrible you felt and the negative impact that substance abuse had on your life and the life of those who you love.
  2. It will remind you that you’re not alone. Recovering Month is your time to be an active member in the recovery community and to connect with others who can help support you along your journey.
  3. It will make you feel good about you. Speaking or writing about your recovery journey can reinforce your hard work, milestones, accomplishments and the valuable lessons you’ve learned along the way. Be proud of yourself and use that pride to motivate you to stay sober.
  4. It will make you feel freer. Many people in recovery admit to feeling lighter and freer after telling their stories and for good reason. Sharing your journey can help broaden your emotional support network and help you release any negative emotions weighing you down.
  5. It may inspire someone else to get help. Someone may just listen to or read your story and begin to imagine him or herself in recovery, too.
