World Suicide Prevention Day

world suicide prevention daySeptember 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day, organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide is preventable. This year’s theme: “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.”

Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. It’s responsible for more 800,000 deaths, which equals one suicide every 40 seconds. According to IASP, there are many things that you can do daily, and also on World Suicide Prevention Day, to prevent suicidal behavior including:

  • Educating yourself and others about the causes of suicide.
  • Showing compassion and care for those who are in distress in your community.
  • Questioning the stigma associated with suicide, suicidal behavior and mental health problems.
  • Sharing your own experiences.

The Warning Signs of Suicide Any mere thought or mention at all of suicide warrants immediate attention. If you believe someone is at risk of suicide, don’t be afraid to take action. WSPD is the perfect time to learn the warning signs of suicide so you can decipher a cry for help. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, these include:

  • Threats or comments about killing themselves, also known as suicidal ideation. This can begin with seemingly harmless thoughts like “I wish I wasn’t here” but can become more overt and dangerous.
  • Increased alcohol and drug use.
  • Aggressive behavior.
  • Social withdrawal from friends, family and the community.
  • Dramatic mood swings.
  • Talking, writing or thinking about death.
  • Impulsive or reckless behavior.
