Be Humble Day: Humility and Recovery (Be Humble Day is Feb 22)

Be Humble DayFebruary 22 is Be Humble Day, a made-up holiday created to increase empathy and awareness and get people to think about the virtue of humility. The idea is that being humble for just one day may result in prolonged humility; you’ll realize how important it is and how great it feels to be humble. If you’re in recovery, you’re likely familiar with the importance of humility. It plays a big part in accepting that you’re powerless over your addiction. To accept your addiction and restart your life, you must have humility. What Is Humility? Webster defines humility as “the quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people; the quality or state of being humble.” How does this apply to recovery? Humility will help you be open minded as you attend meetings, do the work of recovery and repair any relationships damaged by your past addiction. Humility will also help you accept your weaknesses and limitations so you can grow to your full potential. Humble people are able to accept constructive criticism and take advice in order to make themselves better. As you’re learning to live life sober and rediscover the new sober you,  you’ll need humility. Being humble will allow you to be grateful for the small wins that make up recovery and recognize all who have helped support you along the way. It’s really important to practice and work on becoming humble. Start by thinking about what it means to be humble, think about what humility means to your recovery, how humble you actually are and how can you have more humility in the future. In the words of Ernest Hemingway: “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”  Grow Humble in Your Recovery at BRC At BRC, we can help push you beyond your comfort zone so you’re able to grow as a person and build a better, sober life.
