Who Needs Intensive Addiction Treatment?

Intensive Addiction Treatment Addiction recovery is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Depending on certain factors, such as length and intensity of substance use, some people may be particularly treatment-resistant. These individuals may have used drugs and alcohol for a very long time and experienced severe withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop on their own. In such incidences, seeking intensive addiction treatment can result in improved outcomes and lasting sobriety.

What is Intensive Addiction Treatment?

Intensive addiction treatment provides a solution for those who are seeking healing on a deeper level. With a mixture of proven, evidence-based therapies and rigorous 12-step programming, this can be an excellent solution for people who need high-quality care very quickly. Many intensive programs begin with medically supervised detox. This is first recommended after a clinical and medical evaluation, which will inventory one’s history of substance use and determine whether detox is necessary. This process also enables providers to create an individualized treatment plan for each patient. Medically supervised detox may be recommended for those addicted to:

  • Alcohol
  • Opiates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Cocaine
  • Meth
  • Stimulants
  • Hallucinogens
  • Ecstasy and other synthetic drugs
  • Marijuana and cannabis-containing substances

Intensive treatment includes all of the hallmarks of traditional addiction centers, but the daily schedules and overall experience are much more focused. Generally, one can expect to participate in clinical therapy sessions, holistic wellness education, and the exploration of past traumas that may have contributed to substance use. Put simply, intensive addiction treatment packs all of the fundamentals and lessons of residential treatment into a shorter, highly structured time frame. Inpatient programs tend to last between 28 and 90 days. In contrast, Makana Path clients have the option of participating in a 28-day or 42-day track, meaning that intensive healing is ideal for those who have relapsed or whose lifestyles are incompatible with a long-term primary residential treatment program. This can include working professionals or parents.

What to Expect in This Program

Intensive treatment programs seek to heal clients from within through a combination of spiritual wellness, clinical programming, and 12-step philosophies. These approaches allow treatment providers to home in on the underlying issues that lead to substance use. They also empower patients to build healthy coping mechanisms and resist drugs and alcohol moving forward. Each day is fully scheduled with programs that cover topics including (but not limited to):

  • Trauma recovery
  • Family of origin patterns
  • Feelings of shame and guilt
  • Attachment theory and styles
  • The development of healthy relationships

A major component of addiction treatment is the healing of old belief systems that limit people in all aspects of life. These are best addressed through a holistic approach combining various therapeutic modalities and complementary therapies, including individual therapy, group therapy, individual recovery coaching, experiential therapies (yoga, meditation), 12-step education, individual assignments, physical exercise (supervised by a certified physical trainer), and healthy meal preparation. By covering issues from the mind to the body to the spirit, those attending intensive programs are able to truly heal. Individual therapeutic models utilized in intensive addiction treatment include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Cognitive processing therapy (CPT)
  • Attachment theory-based therapies
  • Internal family systems (IFS)
  • Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT)
  • Narrative therapy
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
