Making Spirituality a Daily Practice

spirituality

A big part of sober living is finding spirituality in your every day life. This means discovering a sense of meaningfulness in your life and coming to know that you have a purpose to fulfill. There are many factors that play a role in defining spirituality – religious faith, beliefs, values, ethics, principles and morals.

Spirituality allows you to tap into your inner calm and peace so you can better handle whatever life brings. In fact, studies show that those who practice spirituality have fewer cravings and relapses, less anxiety and greater optimism. What’s more, spiritual health can alter the way you experience life events and perceive stressful situations, making it easier to cope with the emotional highs and lows of sober life.

Here are a few ways to incorporate spirituality into your sober living plan.

  1. Prioritize self-care. Your physical, mental and spiritual health are linked, so make time to care for all of those areas. This means making an effort to eat better, sleep, exercise, manage stress, practice relaxation strategies and carve out time for activities you enjoy.
  2. Experience nature. Perhaps one of the most spiritual things you can do is to explore nature. Take a peaceful hike and pay attention to the amazing sights, sounds and smells. Or just head to your favorite park and sit under a tree or on a bench and take in the nature and wonders around you.
  3. Make time for quiet contemplation. In order to connect to the world around you, you’ll need some quiet time. Mediating or journaling for 10 to 20 minutes each day is a great place to start. And remember to shut off that smartphone so you don’t have any interruptions.
  4. Practice mindfulness. Being more mindful can help you tap into spirituality. It will clear your mind so you can focus on the blessings of everyday life and how to strengthen your spirit in order to survive and thrive in recovery.
