Keeping a Gratitude Journal

gratitude journalStudy after study shows that the simple act of writing down the things for which we’re grateful are plenty. This includes better sleep, greater immunity, less anxiety and depression and more overall happiness. A gratitude journal is your opportunity to write down a few things each day – or every other day – that you’re thankful for. You don’t need to write a long passage – just a few minutes to record the changing leaves, hugs of a loved one or just another day of recovery without any slip-ups or setbacks. Doing so can help you find the silver lining in your life and the good in each day. In turn, you’ll be more resilient and the ups and downs in recovery will seem less daunting. Even if writing isn’t something you’ve always loved or never really got into, it’s worth a try. Keep these tips in mind to make a gratitude journal work for you:

  • Don’t just go through the motions. Take time to really think about what to include in your journal and why this person, place, thing or event plays a role in your happiness. Make sure to include people who have helped your recovery or inspired you in even a small way.
  • Aim for depth over breadth. While you don’t need to write lengthy passages, adding a detail or two carries more benefits than a superficial list.
  • Think subtraction, not just addition. Another approach is to tally and reflect upon what your life would be without certain blessings.
  • Give surprises special attention. Studies show that unexpected or surprising events tend to elicit stronger levels of gratitude.
