Online Sobriety: Finding Fellowship During the Pandemic

Ample research has found that strong relationships and support are vital for people who are working to maintain their sobriety. Attending regular group meetings, checking in with a sober sponsor and surrounding yourself with friends and family who understand your goals can give you the motivation you need to keep making positive progress. However, the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought many of the things we took for granted to a screeching halt.

We know that large, in-person group gatherings are one way this deadly virus spreads. Six months into the pandemic, staying home except for essential errands remains one of the best ways to keep yourself and others safe and healthy. But it’s still crucial to maintain a sense of connection with your recovery community, even if it must take place virtually. Here are some ideas to help you stay in touch.

1. Have Dedicated Check-In Times

Especially in early recovery, structure is vital. Too much free time can create the temptation to reach for drugs or a drink to fill the void. Create a daily schedule and stick to it. Build in times for calling or video chatting with people you care about.

Instead of keeping the conversation firmly in small-talk territory, be honest about how you’re feeling. If you’re anxious or upset about anything, take time to unpack why. Sharing complex emotions instead of trying to sweep them under the rug is crucial for your mental well-being.

2. Attend Online Meetings

The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t changed the fact that individual and group therapy are valuable tools for recovering addicts. It has, however, changed the way people can safely interact with their therapist or recovery group. Many therapists adapted to the pandemic by expanding into teletherapy services to serve their clients, which has made therapy more accessible for anyone who needs it.

Some 12-step groups have also moved online in response to the novel coronavirus. If you think you’d benefit from 12-step meetings, but have been intimidated by the idea of attending one in person, this could be your opportunity to get your feet wet.

3. Give Back to Others

Signing up to volunteer is an excellent way to foster a sense of connection and make you feel part of something larger than yourself. It can help you meet like-minded people and motivate you to stay active in your community. During this pandemic, virtually donating your time and talents to a cause you care about can help you reap the rewards of volunteering without having to leave home.
