What Successful People Learn From Failure

While overnight fame and fortune is an ideal, it’s vanishingly rare for anyone to achieve this feat in reality. Thousands of people throughout history could attest to the fact that the path to success isn’t always linear. For example, while we now celebrate Thomas Edison’s many brilliant innovations, we tend to forget it took him thousands of prototypes to develop a working incandescent lightbulb. As he quipped, “I haven’t failed; I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

As it turns out, failure is an excellent teacher if you remain open-minded to the lessons it has to offer you. Next time something doesn’t go the way you planned, remind yourself that some of the world’s most beloved athletes, inventors, authors, leaders and other luminaries floundered before finding success. What can you learn from failure?

1. Nobody’s Perfect – and That’s OK

You can gain a great deal of inner strength and resilience from your mistakes. Think about how different your life would be today if role models like your parents and teachers never allowed you to experience failure. You probably would have missed untold opportunities for valuable personal growth along the way.

2. Failure Leads to Opportunity

You can probably think of at least one event or occasion that seemed like a failure at the time, but you turned it around and found a different path that worked out even better for you. For example, maybe you went through a bad breakup that led to you finding a new romantic relationship with a supportive person who’s an excellent match for your personality and temperament. Looking back, you might view the hurt and shame you experienced from the breakup as a necessary experience that helped pave the way for you to meet someone new.

3. You Don’t Need to Hold Yourself Back

Most people go to great lengths to maintain the status quo. They don’t take risks because it frightens them to imagine what might happen if they don’t succeed. However, once you’ve failed often enough, you gain the courage and wisdom necessary to take a leap without being afraid of the potential consequences. After all, you’ve learned it’s not the end of the world if something doesn’t work out the way you’d envisioned.

4. You’re Worthy of Self-Respect

When you embrace failure’s lessons, you’ll be able to move through life with more self-confidence. You’ll also recognize that every success – no matter how tiny – is worth celebrating as a triumphant achievement. Every time you pick yourself back up after a fall, you’ll gain more pride and dignity.
